The MBB in Le Mauricien Newspaper! :P

by

Hehehe! Congrats to the folks at MBB! You people finally made it to the newspapers! It’s on Le Mauricien of Saturday 12th April, on Page 15.

We know what the MBB is about, but just a small refresh. The MBB, or the Mauritian Blog Brethren, is a blog which tracks other blogs, specifically Mauritian blogs. They often post reviews about Mauritian blogs, giving its readers an opportunity to discover other Mauritian bloggers. There is also a forum where bloggers and non-bloggers, Mauritians or International can participate.

There’s also some comments made by Jevin and Morina about blogging in general.

For a better coverage of the event, check out TheMediaGuru who has an extensive article on this.

So big thanks to all those trying to bring the Mauritian Blogging Community to light.

Mauritius Telecom and Orange??

by
Inf

You must have noticed by now that Mauritius Telecom, the major Mauritian ISP, is conducting a major advertising campaign, promoting its change of identity. The famous blue “t” logo has changed to an orange colour. Same for the “Mauritius” in “Mauritius Telecom”. There’s also this big billboard advert that says “Le 17 Avril, nous aceuillons un invité de marque” (“On the 17th April, we welcome a distinguished guest” in French). This heralds the partnership of Mauritius Telecom with Orange (former Wanadoo)?

I believe yes. This has been hinted for a long time now. Orange will now be a partner of Mauritius Telecom, if not administering it. Apparently, Orange will now be active in the Internet Service sector, as well as the Mobile and Telecommunications sector.

There’s not much information about this event circulating around for now, and there has been some issues raised by the gold trading unions about a name change from Mauritius Telecom to Orange or something similar. Not much, apart from that.

One of the major reasons for making any financial investment is that you consider it as a backup if in case you need it in future and gold is one of the most of the easy to liquidate the hard asset. In case you happen to be in need to use your gold to make your ends meet, you just have to sell it to the buyer you prefer. There are always buyers ready to buy the gold. But keep in mind the return rate is not exactly what you expect, instead, it is opposite especially in the case of physical gold, you get less than what you invest. Commodities trading is often considered the optimal choice for trading gold, ensuring a high potential for value.

What this means for us? Do you think there will be better services offered to Mauritians? More bandwidth, resulting in better Internet speeds? Better customer support? Let’s hear your views! 😛

No Posts!

As you see, there are no new posts for almost a week! We are very sorry, but both Neel and myself have been taken up by the Test Week held at UoM. It was on 24th and ended on the 5th, due to the heavy rains that hit Mauritius during the past week.

We didn’t have time to write anything, since the amount of revision to be done was consequent. And we are still going to be taken up by the exams coming in 3 weeks.

Heeyy! Come’on! We are students. We are busy too! GeekScribes might hit some slow-time for the coming month or so. We’ll try to post, but it won’t be frequent.

But after that one month of misery, troubles and headaches, we promise that you will have ample articles to read. 2 months of holidays coming! YAAY! 😛

We ask for your understanding for the coming month, and hope you will keep checking around here often. Thank you, dear reader! 😛

What is a Feed?

by
Guru

This entry is specially for Abhi, and for others who do not know what a feed means and how it can be used. In the simplest terms, it is only used to get updates. What this means? Let’s say you love a particular web site and want to read what latest stuff has been published (only if the platform used supports feeds). A feed will allow you to have these latest contents directly without going to the URL. That means, you can have a common pool where you have all the updates of your favourite sites to “feed” on. The feeds can be in two formats Atom and RSS… Continue Reading »

Mauritian DNS Servers! DIE!

by
Inf

Arghhh! I hate those things! Mauritian ones are not reliable! I’ve been trying to access GeekScribes since this morning, and I kept getting a 404 Error! My international friends could easily access. The server responded when I pinged. So what was the issue? My connection was good, so it meant one thing. The DNS servers in Mauritius were fc*in with me!

That was the last time I’m suffering through those servers. I had considered the alternative for a long long time, and now I finally accepted it, and moved to it. If you are like me, and getting loads of frequent 404 errors while using the local DNS Servers, use this method. What was this alternative? OpenDNS.

Review: Logitech X-540 vs Creative M5300

x540

When I was looking to buy my first 5.1 channels speaker system, I considered those 2 models primarily. At that time, the Logitech X-540 was not yet available in Mauritius, and I had to opt for the Creative Inspire M5300 which was priced Rs.2700 (~$90). As I have heard from other reviews, this subwoofers have something amazing, according to some, it’s performance is great, let’s find out if it is true or not. Well, for this review I’m not going to bother you with figures and whatnot. I’ll just tell you about my testing results. For both setups, I placed the 2 back speakers on a wall behind me, the front and centre speakers were on my desk in front. The speakers are powered by a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE 5.1 capable soundcard.
